Developed for Texas Instruments and later acquired by Raytheon Systems for military use, the thermal-imaging device captures infrared radiation on a 1 inch square, 320x240-pixel barium-strontium-titanate ferroelectric sensor behind the car’s grill. The camera is sensitive to infrared radiation in the 3-5µm and 8-14µm wavelengths, effectively weeding out the range for water absorption so that the device is blind to rain and fog.

Designed by Delphi-Delco of Dayton, Ohio, the adjustable display (HUD) is achieved by means of an LCD mounted in the dashboard, which projects an image onto a small area on the lower portion of the driver's side windscreen. This small portion is coated with an aspheric mirror which reflects the image projected by the LCD display.

A problem was discovered, however, in installation. Against the glare produced by the headlamps, the display projection was far too dim. In addition, at around -10° Celsius, the mercury vapors in CCFL's begin to coagulate into droplets, causing the lamp to dim exponentially as temperature decreases.">
